Wind Planning Permission

In England and Scotland, changes to permitted development rights for renewable technologies introduced on 6th April 2008 and 12th March 2009 respectively, have lifted the requirements for planning permission for most domestic microgeneration technologies.

Always check with your local authority to find out if you require planning permission or not, the information on this page is for guidance only.

Micro and small wind planning permission

Due to legal technicalities the current statutory instrument (SI) does not cover micro or small wind. Once these issues have been resolved, free standing wind turbines will be permitted when not in conservation areas. Consideration should be given to issues such as restricting view, noise, flicker and environmental impact . A feasibility study is preferred to clarify these items but also to identify grid connection issues if any.

Wind planning permission for Business

In the UK, because of the size of the turbines involved for wind farm usage planning permission will be required for wind turbine projects.

Consideration should be given to issues such as access, grid connection, restricting view, noise, flicker, environmental impact and general location. A feasibility study is preferred to clarify these items.

The feasibility study will highlight all of the above issues and bring to light any ‘show stoppers’ prior to planning submission.
